The Story HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1998. This honor places Vogel in the rarified company of winners such as PROOF (David Auburn), ANGELS IN AMERICA (Tony Kushner), DRIVING MISS DAISY (Alfred Uhry), and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (Tennessee Williams) to name but a few (CLICK HERE for a list of all winners). HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE is a very serious...comedy! The subject is familial sexual abuse, in this case a young girl being taken advantage of by an uncle. In this play, however, it is not quite that simple. The "relationship" also involves "true love," family history, tradition, and even acquiescence. Vogel indicates that a major source of her inspiration for this play was LOLITA, by Vladimir Nabokov. In LOLITA, a middle-aged man and a 14-year-old girl fall in love, the story being told mostly from the perspective of the man. In HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, Vogel seeks to cover similar ground, but from the girl's point of view. The result is an incredibly entertaining, witty, and completely serious examination of a topic that is rarely discussed, although some estimate that 10,000,000 Americans are victims of some type of incest (CLICK HERE for more details).
